May sound contradicting, if thinking conventionally. Much of wasted energy and resources is very simply the practical impossibility of constantly optimizing every single aspect of life.

Take indoor climate for example. Even if cost is not an issue, setting a constant temperature inside the house will not provide the most comfortable conditions throughout the day. Watching TV, preparing food and eating dinner all require different temperatures, while comfortable sleeping demands a 'temperature curve' throughout the night, to wake up to a totally different temperature altogether.
